A drone crashed on Friday, around 2:00 in the morning, into a residential building in Galați. This was followed by an explosion and a fire in an apartment on the 10th floor of the building.
Two people were injured. The Romanian Ministry of Defense has stated that the situation is under control, and the fire has been extinguished, according to the firefighters.
NATO has been informed about the incident. Secretary General Mark Rutte condemned the events, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with the Romanian people.
Approximately 70 people were evacuated or self-evacuated from the building, reports Agerpres. From the investigations carried out at the scene, all the explosive load of the drone exploded.
“During the past night, a Russian drone crashed into a residential block in the city of Galați, causing a fire and slightly injuring two people. I have been in contact with the Minister of Defense and all measures were immediately taken to protect the population, and, diplomatically, Romania’s allies and partners were informed. This situation is unacceptable and represents a new violation of the airspace, generated by the irresponsible and unjustified continuation of the war waged by Russia in Ukraine. This war continues to affect the security of Romania and the Eastern Flank states. I unequivocally condemn these serious actions and firmly demand Russia to immediately put an end to them,” transmitted the acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
According to the Romanian military, the drone was a Gerani type, of Russian origin. It could not be shot down over the residential area, nor when it was in Ukrainian airspace, the officials from the Romanian armed forces further reported.
