The Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz has signed a memorandum with the Hungarian oil group MOL for the construction of oil reservoirs on Hungarian territory, near the border with Ukraine.
The decision comes against the backdrop of intensifying Russian air strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, reports EFE, cited by Agerpres.
Sergii Fedorenko, the general director of Naftogaz, explained that the project is necessary “in the context of constant Russian attacks on our oil infrastructure”, emphasizing that the situation requires “diversification of supply routes and creation of additional storage capacities outside the attack zone”.
The tanks will be located in the border area, so that the transportation of oil to Ukraine can be carried out quickly and safely.
The agreement was signed during the summit of the Carpathian Integration Initiative, hosted on Friday in Ukraine by President Volodimir Zelenski.
Although the issue of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia has created tensions in the relations between Kiev and Budapest in recent years, bilateral cooperation was relaunched after the change of government in Budapest, following the elections in April, when former Prime Minister Viktor Orban – known for his close relations with Russia – lost to the current Prime Minister, Peter Magyar.
