The Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Mihailo Fedorov, appointed in January, presented on Tuesday the army’s plan for the fifth year of war. The document aims at strengthening air defense, halting the advance of Russian forces, and depriving Moscow of the resources necessary to continue the conflict.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense in Kiev, Fedorov explained that the new strategy responds to the directive outlined by President Volodimir Zelenski, namely “strengthening defense so that the enemy is forced to peace”. These military efforts must be correlated with diplomatic initiatives, as the security of the airspace is considered essential for the functioning of the Ukrainian state, reports EFE and Agerpres.

Ambitious objectives in air defense

The plan presented by the Minister of Defense provides for the identification of 100% of air threats and the interception of “at least” 95% of missiles and drones launched by Russia. For this purpose, the Ukrainian authorities aim to create a multilayered air defense system, based on several types of interceptor systems.

Special attention is given to counteracting Iranian Shahed type drones, used daily by the Russian army in bombings on Ukrainian infrastructure. The Ministry of Defense stated that significant organizational changes have already been made to ensure a systematic and efficient response to these threats.
