A Ukrainian citizen was detained in the state of Brandenburg and is suspected of espionage in favor of Russia, according to a statement released on Thursday by federal prosecutors, as quoted by Reuters.
Germany has intensified its efforts to counter what it describes as increasingly frequent hybrid attacks from Russia, which Chancellor Friedrich Merz considers the main threat to national security.
An internal assessment shows that the German army has, for the first time, categorized the threat of sabotage from Russia against its own troops and facilities as “significant”, the second level out of 4, in terms of severity on the internal threat scale.
