Russia would have rebuilt and expanded an underground nuclear command center located under Kosvinski Kamen mountain, in the Ural region, according to an investigation conducted by The Sunday Times, Danish media group Danwatch, and Dossier Center.
The center, known as “Objective 1335”, would be part of the Russian infrastructure designed to maintain command and control capabilities over nuclear forces in the event of an attack.
The center was initially built during the Cold War period. According to the investigation, reconstruction and expansion works have begun in recent years, and the scale of the project indicates an investment of the order of hundreds of millions of pounds sterling.
A center designed to withstand a nuclear attack
“Objective 1335” is located in a tunnel system carved into the Kosvinski Kamen mountain and is equipped with ventilation and air filtration systems capable of protecting against chemical, biological, and radioactive contamination.
The investigation asserts that, starting from 2018, heavy equipment for excavation and rock drilling, as well as significant quantities of steel, pipes, and cables, have been transported to the area.
The data on acquisitions indicate the use of approximately three million liters of fuel, 823,000 liters of gas, and about 20,000 tons of steel. The quantity of steel is equivalent, in weight, to approximately three Eiffel Towers.
The main works would have been carried out in 2020 and 2021, according to the documents analyzed by journalists.
The amount of concrete used would be sufficient to construct an area of at least 150,000 square meters, the investigation asserts.
