Russia has issued explicit threats against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, going as far as publicly evoking his murder and the display of his body, in a new episode of verbal escalation triggered by an alleged Ukrainian attempt to assassinate Vladimir Putin — an accusation categorically rejected by Kiev.

Moscow’s fury was fueled by claims that Ukraine had ordered a drone attack on the presidential residence at Valdai, where the Kremlin leader often spends his time. However, Ukrainian authorities have dismissed this information as a fabrication intended to justify the continuation of the war initiated by Russia nearly four years ago.

Tensions took on an international dimension after former US President Donald Trump stated that he had learned about the alleged attack directly from Vladimir Putin and that his initial reaction was one of fury. Later, Trump admitted that the information might be unconfirmed and asked American intelligence agencies to clarify the situation.

Meanwhile, Dmitry Medvedev, former President of the Russian Federation and one of the most virulent supporters of the Kremlin’s hard line, launched an extreme verbal attack against Zelensky, in a message posted on the X network. The threatening tone and violent language used were perceived by observers as a serious signal for the fragile prospects of peace negotiations.
