The US Navy is considering renaming the aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller, currently under construction, in honor of President Donald Trump. If the decision is approved, it would represent an unprecedented initiative – no American aircraft carrier has ever borne the name of a sitting president.
The ship was initially christened Doris “Dory” Miller, in honor of a black sailor, enlisted in service and became famous after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The naval forces announced the decision in January 2020, during Trump’s first term.
Discussions regarding the renaming have been taking place since the beginning of 2026, writes The Moscow Times. The name of Dorry Miller could be attributed to another warship, if the aircraft carrier under construction will indeed be “christened” in honor of Donald Trump.
According to foreign press, although the Secretary of the Navy has the authority to name ships, the final decision could belong to the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, and the interim head of the Navy, Hung Kao.
