The American Department of Justice announced on Monday the creation of a fund of 1.776 billion dollars intended to compensate allies of President Donald Trump who claim they were unfairly targeted by the previous administration.
According to the American authorities, the fund will allow the granting of compensation from public money to some of Trump’s supporters through a government agency under the control of the presidential administration.
According to CNN, the announcement was made after Donald Trump dropped the 10 billion dollar lawsuit against the American Tax Office (IRS), in which he accused the institution of not protecting his tax returns and those of the Trump Organization from unauthorized leaks of information.
The Department of Justice clarified that Trump will not receive financial compensation, but will benefit from official apologies.
The fund will likely be the subject of immediate legal challenges from Democrats and watchdog organizations, who assert that this move is tantamount to acts of corruption, allowing the president to enrich his allies on the basis of what critics call unfounded claims about politically motivated prosecutions by the Biden administration.
“The government apparatus should never be used as a weapon against any American, and the intention of this department is to correct past mistakes, while ensuring that this will not happen again“, stated on Monday, in a statement, the acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who was previously part of Trump’s personal defense lawyer team.
The fund will be managed by a committee composed of five members who have not yet been announced, the department specified. Trump will have the power to dismiss any of these members.
