The American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has urged Europe to “wake up from its slumber” and strengthen its defense, warning that the West is at a “turning point”. In a speech delivered in Athens, he said that the choices made now will determine whether the West will maintain its position in the world or enter into decline.

The American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, while visiting Athens, praised the power of the United States and called on Europe to “wake up from sleep” during a speech delivered on Pnyx Hill, near the Acropolis, according to Agerpres.

“We believe that Europe can awaken from its slumber and reignite the fire kindled here millennia ago“, declared the American Secretary of State, praising the civilization of ancient Greece, the cradle of democracy. “Across the entire European continent, we are witnessing what we hope will be the beginning of a generational shift: a surge in defense spending, a wave of new partnerships and programs, as well as a boost in industry and production, following the historic commitments made last year” at the NATO summit in The Hague, he stated, adopting a more positive tone towards the European states.

He asserted, however, that Western civilization is at a “turning point” and at a crossroads between “national power” and decline. In antiquity, the Greeks “understood that power is not just about having the means of defense, but also about having the necessary credibility to demonstrate that they are ready to use them,” he further stated.
