The Vice President of the USA, JD Vance, has repeatedly criticized what he called an unprecedented and “shameful” external interference in the Hungarian parliamentary elections, while at the same time, expressing strong support for Viktor Orbán.
Without any hesitation, he went from criticizing the “bureaucrats” of Europe for “one of the most serious examples of foreign electoral interference” he had ever seen, and accusing them of trying to “destroy Hungary’s economy“, to saying that he is “here to help him in this electoral campaign” and expecting Orbán to win Sunday’s vote, writes The Guardian.
Vance stated that he sees Orbán as a leader who “defends his country fiercely“, “upholds the values of Western civilization” and is right in numerous areas, from energy to the stance on Ukraine.
However, the evident contradiction at the heart of his criticisms against “external interference” will undoubtedly raise questions throughout the rest of Europe.
His repeated attacks on “Brussels” and Ukraine – two of Orbán’s main targets in this campaign – will fuel the concerns of other European leaders, who must decide how to react to this new reality in which the US Vice President “does not intervene at all” in an election from an EU member state.
