Russian ultra-nationalists and motorcyclists close to Putin have organized, near the border with Estonia, a ceremony in which they “baptized” the Moon and tried to symbolically tie it to Russia. The ritual used a stone covered with Bronze Age petroglyphs, which the organizers claim to have cosmic origins.

Members of a far-right nationalist group and bikers from Vladimir Putin’s favorite club organized a “baptism” ceremony for the Moon. They say they wanted to “make it Orthodox and tie it to Russia”. After the ritual, the bikers put on a stunt show with a lunar rover and an armored vehicle.

The event, held on September 27 near the border with Estonia, was the idea of Alexandr Prohanov, the president of the Izborsk Club. It is a state-funded think tank that brings together nationalist and ultra-conservative intellectuals. Among its members is Aleksandr Dughin, a nationalist political philosopher, often referred to as “Putin’s brain”.

Shortly after its establishment, the Izborsk Club published a statement calling on “all statesmen who care about the future of Russia” to act as “a united patriotic and imperial front”. The declared aim was “returning to Orthodox-Christian spirituality and the universality of traditional Russia”, so that the country could become “invincible”.

The ceremony was also attended by the “Night Wolves”, a politically radical motorcycle club, whom Putin has called “friends”. Its members assisted in the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and fought alongside the Russia-backed separatists in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
