US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy by claiming that solar panels get so hot they kill birds and other animals that land on them. He made the remarks during a campaign rally in Texas.
In his speech, the White House leader compared solar panels to a hot stove and claimed they posed a danger to animals.
“Animals jump onto them and get fried because those black panels are hotter than your stove,” Trump said.
He went on to ask a reporter about birds landing on the panels: “Have you ever seen what happens to a bird when it lands on these? […] A bird lands on them? It’s done for.”
The remarks were accompanied by criticism of large-scale solar installations, which the US president described as harmful to animals.
Wind Turbines Also Face Criticism
Trump also took aim at wind power, arguing that turbines are expensive, unsightly, and harmful to the environment. He claimed that they kill birds and are costly to operate.
“Every time you build a windmill, it costs the country millions of dollars a year to keep that horrible thing running. It’s ugly, it’s bad for the environment, it kills birds, and on top of that, it costs a fortune,” the US president said.
