Ihor Malcevski, aged 69, was in the headquarters of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, on Monday, when the historic building was hit by a drone from the Russian forces.
In Monday’s attack at the Academy of Sciences in Kiev, one person was killed and three others were injured, according to local authorities. In the vicinity of the nineteenth-century building are the German Embassy, the National Opera, Saint Vladimir Cathedral, and a series of government buildings, wrote The Guardian.
Malcevski, the deputy director of a department within the institution, looked out from the window of his office located on the 3rd floor, while black and dense smoke was coming out of the building.
“My thoughts were focused on one thing: how to save myself from this situation”, he recounted on Monday for Reuters.
The fear of heights did not stop him from going out the window and climbing onto a ledge on the facade of the building, to escape from the smoke and flames inside.
“In the first few seconds you don’t understand – then the mind kicks in and starts to analyze what happened”, the man further stated in the interview given from his residence outside of Kiev.
Eventually, Malcevski descended a ladder that the building rescuers had propped up.
