The Ukrainian Navy announces that it has hit the Russian ship Izumrud near Novorossiisk, in an operation carried out with naval drones. Ukrainian authorities claim that the attack caused casualties among the crew, but Moscow has not yet commented on the information.

According to a statement from the Ukrainian Navy, the patrol ship was reportedly hit by an unmanned Sargan-3000 naval system, during an operation carried out off the Russian coast.

Ukrainian officials claim that the attack resulted in deaths and injuries among the ship’s crew. The information could not be independently verified, and the Russian side has not commented on Kiev’s claims to date, according to Dialog.

For Ukraine, Izumrud is linked to one of the most tense episodes before the large-scale invasion. The ship was involved in the confrontation in the Kerch Strait, on November 25, 2018, when Russia captured three Ukrainian military vessels and detained the 24 sailors on board.

The Ukrainian authorities are now presenting the ship’s strike as a retaliation for that episode and a signal of the shift in the balance of power in the Black Sea.
