While the self-proclaimed authorities and the Russian embassy in Chisinau speak of 36,000 people who have applied for citizenship through simplified procedures, the inhabitants of the left bank of the Dniester are reticent.

Some believe that due to the initiative, the population in the region could end up on the front line. Others have frankly stated that they hold Romanian documents, wish to work in the European Union and do not want to obtain a Russian passport.

On the other hand, the elderly claim they want Russian citizenship to receive a pension, while some people say they ask for it because they could not obtain documents from any other state, reports realitatea.md.

The interlocutors of Realitatea have also hinted that they might have problems on the left bank of the Dniester, if they were to discuss the direction in which the region should go – Moldova, the EU or Russia.

In the last week, the administration of the Transnistrian region insists that over 36,000 residents of the region have requested Russian citizenship, through simplified procedures.

On May 15th, Vladimir Putin enacted the law that simplifies procedures for Transnistria residents. On May 25th, registrations began, and a day later, officials from the Russian embassy announced that approximately 20,000 people are listed in the electronic queue. A week later, Tiraspol informally reported about over 36,000 applications.

The Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Valeriu Chiveri, told journalists that in his opinion the figures are “drawn”.

Meanwhile, the alleged foreign minister from the left bank of the Dniester, Vitalii Ignatiev, acknowledged that the intense promotion of the initiative is part of the “positive agenda”, aimed at strengthening society on the left bank of the Dniester, against the backdrop of relevant socio-economic problems.
