The Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, had an ironic reaction after his American counterpart, Donald Trump, asked him on Wednesday, July 8, at the NATO summit in Ankara, if he would be willing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

When asked by Donald Trump if he would agree to hold possible peace talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Zelenski replied: “It’s difficult. It’s full of Ukrainian drones there”.

“Indeed. It’s hard to go to Moscow,” Donald Trump replied.

When Trump asked Zelensky if he would agree to go to Moscow for talks with Putin, Zelensky replied:

“It’s difficult. There are a lot of Ukrainian drones there.”

    Trump agreed, saying:

The exchange of remarks took place during a press conference held by Volodimir Zelenski and Donald Trump following a bilateral meeting.

During the conference, Donald Trump stated that his relationship with the Ukrainian president has significantly improved compared to the tense moment of their meeting in the Oval Office, at the beginning of the year.

The discussions between the two leaders took place in the context where Ukraine is trying to obtain additional support from Western allies, especially Patriot anti-aircraft defense systems and interceptor missiles, against the backdrop of intensifying Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Before the summit, Trump had stated that both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, “both want” to reach a peace agreement.

We remind that, in an open letter addressed to Vladimir Putin, the leader from Kiev proposed setting a clear date for a direct meeting between the two heads of state, with the aim of identifying a way to end the war. Zelenski also suggested that representatives from Europe and the United States could participate in a potential bilateral format, to provide additional guarantees to a possible peace process.
