The incumbent Prime Minister of Hungary, the reactionary Viktor Orban, presented his resignation as the leader of his party on Tuesday, following the electoral defeat this month, but Fidesz did not accept it and postponed any decision until the next congress in June, reports EFE, quoted by Agerpres.

“No decisions were made regarding personal positions; although Viktor Orban presented his resignation from the presidency, it was not accepted,” stated Deputy Erik Banki after leaving the party leadership meeting.

It is expected that the party will make decisions regarding leadership positions at its upcoming congress, scheduled for June 13.

“I have never taken a step back and I will not do so now. Whatever path I will follow, it will always be forward,” Orban declared at the entrance to Tuesday’s meeting, when asked about his plans after announcing that he is returning his parliamentary mandate to the party and will not be part of the new legislature. Last Saturday, the acting Prime Minister announced that, from now on, he will focus on “reorganizing national forces.”

Orban, aged 62, has been a member of the Budapest parliament since the first free elections in Hungary after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1990.
