The last year has become a turning point for politics in Hungary, marked by unprecedented scandals directly affecting Viktor Orbán’s regime. From accusations of corruption and ties with Russia, to internal espionage and aggressive media campaigns, all these events have revealed major weaknesses in the Fidesz party and have shaken the entire public opinion in the country, notes eurointegration.com.

Hungarian politics, known for its tensions and fierce competition between parties, is now going through a period of major instability. At the root of the crisis are corruption revelations related to funding received by the regime from the Kremlin, accusations of spying on the opposition, and the use of special services to intimidate journalists and political opponents.

The scandal begins with investigative journalism

The week began with a tense confrontation between Hungarian authorities and investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi, one of the most well-known critics of the Orbán regime. Panyi revealed direct links between the regime and Russia, including money and resource transports through private flights to and from Moscow, facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Péter Szijjártó.

The journalist’s materials have shown that the Kremlin directly finances certain actions of Fidesz and that Hungarian officials have used these funds to consolidate internal power and manipulate elections. In addition, Panyi published evidence about the use of special services to monitor the opposition and intimidate critical journalists, which has generated a huge wave of reactions in the media and among citizens.

A video clip in which the journalist details these connections has been viewed by over 1.7 million people in just two days, an impressive number considering that Hungary has less than 10 million inhabitants.
