During the war with Ukraine, Russian citizens have reportedly experienced an unprecedented increase in living standards, unseen in the statistics of the last approximately 20 years, asserts Rosstat.

According to official data, last year the real disposable income of Russians increased by 7.4%. A year earlier, it had risen by 8.2%, and in 2023 — by 5.4%. The cumulative increase over three years, of 22.7%, would be unprecedented for a comparable three-year period since the 2006–2008 interval, when, according to Rosstat, incomes increased by 30.2%.

Even taking into account the 1% decrease in 2022, in the four years of war, the real income of the population would have increased by 21.5%, the institution claims. The last period with similar trends was in the 2000s: between 2002 and 2007, real disposable income increased by over 10% annually, reaching a peak of 14.9% in 2003.

After the annexation of Crimea, however, real incomes have long stagnated, and only in 2024 would they have exceeded the level of 2013, according to official data.
