Against the backdrop of the erosion of the international system established after the Second World War, countries such as Canada and Great Britain suggest that Europe must take on the role of architect of global stability.
According to a Bloomberg analysis, some of the closest allies of the United States believe that the security and trade architecture, supported by the West for over seven decades, has irreparably degraded. In this context, the voice of Europe becomes essential in defining a new international order.
Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, who warned from the beginning of the year about the collapse of global rules, urged leaders not to resign themselves to a world that is “increasingly isolated and violent”.
“I am firmly convinced that the international order will be restored, but this process will start from Europe,” Carney declared at the summit of the European Political Community held in Yerevan.
Transatlantic tensions under the “America First” doctrine
The reassessment of relations with Washington comes against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s aggressive foreign policy. His approach, defined by high customs tariffs and questioning NATO commitments, has shaken the foundations of traditional alliances.
Although Europe’s dependence on the American security umbrella remains a reality — analyses suggesting that Europe would need over a decade to secure its own defense — many allies are now seeking to strengthen their forces to counteract the rise of the “politics of force” practiced by major powers, including China.
A new European opposition
At the summit in Yerevan, which brought together nearly 50 leaders, democratic resilience and economic security were the central themes. Mark Carney advocated for alliances with “middle powers” to resist the intimidation tactics of the great hegemons, thus joining an increasingly vocal chorus of European critics of the Trump administration’s policies.
The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has become one of the most vehement critics, labeling the US conflict with Iran as illegal and prohibiting the use of Spanish military bases to support American attacks.
