In a move that underscores an increasingly visible ideological coordination in the Eastern European information space, the pro-Russian and revisionist politician Victoria Furtună has launched a campaign in the Republic of Moldova focused on the pillars of “food, water, energy”. The theme is not an original one, but represents an almost identical adoption of the slogan heavily promoted in Romania by Călin Georgescu, a politician known for his pro-Russian and ultra-nationalist positions, writes g4media.ro.
The convergence between the two is not limited to words alone, but indicates a common strategy of capturing the dissatisfied electorate through apparently vital themes, yet laden with a geopolitical substrate clearly oriented towards the east.
Călin Georgescu has built his entire political platform on the theme of “Food, Water, Energy”, the title of one of his books, published as early as 2016. For Georgescu, these resources represent the elements of absolute sovereignty, often sprinkled with mystical rhetoric and virulent criticism of the West and international structures.
Georgescu, already prosecuted for complicity in a coup d’état, promoted his theories through blatant lies and scientific forgeries.
In the mirror, Victoria Furtună adopted the slogan “Water is life, food, energy, and development”, using the same points of support to suggest an economic independence that excludes European integration or current strategic partnerships.
“Water is life, food, energy, and development. Today, we discussed a solution in a working group with the academician, the scientist, a man who will remain in the history of the Republic of Moldova, former president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, internationally recognized and appreciated, whose expertise is still prioritized on one of the most acute problems of the country: the water supply of the Republic of Moldova. What surprised me the most? That the solutions have existed since the formation of our state. There is no need for miracles or revolutionary inventions – only political will is necessary,” Furtună wrote in a Facebook post.
His new campaign, illustrated by images generated with artificial intelligence software, is an adaptation of the so-called Romanian sovereign discourse to the context of Chisinau. Both politicians promote the idea that the state should be the sole master over resources, a vision that in Eastern Europe is often used as a screen for isolation from Western markets and approach to Moscow’s sphere of influence.
Who is Victoria Furtună: Banned in the EU, promoted by Russia
Furtună was banned in the EU in July 2025 for promoting Russia’s agenda, according to a EU Council statement. The EU Council accused Victoria Furtună of receiving significant support from Ilan Șor and the political bloc Victory/Pobeda, which is the successor of the outlawed ȘOR political party, led by Ilan Șor. More precisely, during the 2024 presidential elections, members of the Victory/Pobeda political bloc were encouraged to vote for Victoria Furtună, including through bribery actions.
After the presidential elections, G4Media.ro revealed links between Victoria Furtună and the extremist party AUR: Mateea Petrescu, who was one of the communication advisors for the leader of this formation, George Simion, traveled at the end of May to the Republic of Moldova, having scheduled meetings with the “loyalists” of the pro-Russian politician Ilan Șor and with the president of the “Greater Moldova” Party.
Subsequently, Romania revoked his citizenship.
