On August 18, several NATO military aircraft were observed near the Kaliningrad region. A spokesperson for the North Atlantic Alliance stated that an operation involving American and Norwegian fighter jets, Polish ground units, as well as other forces, is taking place, with the mission being led by the USA.

OSINTdefender analysts assert that flights of military aircraft such as E-3 AWACS and ARTEMIS II in the region are not unusual. However, the presence of the most recent electronic warfare aircraft EA-37B near the enclave could indicate that the USA and NATO may need to collect data in the area.

“We can only hope that Russia has understood the message”, commented on the situation Carlo Masala, military expert at Bundeswehr University.

The Kaliningrad region is considered one of the most militarized in Russia. The enclave hosts air defense systems, missiles, and other equipment capable of threatening Poland, the Baltic states, and NATO communications. For this reason, the Alliance views the region as an important element of Russian military potential on its eastern flank.

Unusual NATO aerial activity was recorded following warnings from American intelligence services about the risk of a Russian attack on a NATO country, to test its resolve to defend its allies, reports The Moscow Times. At the same time, two weeks ago, Lithuanian authorities stated that the Kremlin might consider attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic states, using intercepted Ukrainian drones to mask their actions.

In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised that he would “destroy from the ground up” any country that decides to attack the Kaliningrad region. He also warned that a blockade of the region could lead to a large-scale war between Russia and NATO.
