The Ukrainian government is confident that it has the support of Donald Trump for a pressure campaign designed to force Russia to accept new peace negotiations. The information comes in the context of recent discussions between the American president and Volodimir Zelenski, in which the White House leader would have conveyed messages of support and encouragement for a stronger position of Ukraine.
A high-ranking official from Kiev told the Ukrainian publication that Trump would have had a more favorable tone towards Zelenski and would have suggested, in private, to be “more daring” in discussions with Moscow.
“Trump says he doesn’t really believe that Putin will do anything without pressure being applied on him,” the official stated, according to Kyiv Independent.
At the same time, an American official stated that “President Trump believes in peace through strength,” without explicitly confirming support for Ukrainian military actions on Russian territory. However, the idea of a direct meeting between Zelenski and Vladimir Putin remains stalled, with the Kremlin consistently refusing the option of discussions outside of Moscow.
“I will not go to Moscow to meet with Putin. We can meet in Turkey, Switzerland, or the Middle East”, Zelenski declared, according to the cited source, while Russia insists that a potential meeting should take place on Russian territory.
According to the Ukrainian publication, Zelenski’s team believes that a direct invitation from Trump could change the dynamics of the negotiations, as the Kremlin leader would avoid openly rejecting such a proposal.
