Donald Trump’s Peace Council is set to convene at a resort in Cyprus on June 30th to “adjust its strategy,” a familiar official told Politico. Two high-ranking EU officials involved in the preparations for the meeting confirmed, on condition of anonymity, that the meeting will take place next week on the Mediterranean island and will last two or three days. The objective is to “reset” the strategy after the “war in Iran completely diverted attention in recent months,” one of the officials said.
At the meeting, representatives of the National Committee for Gas Administration will participate – a committee formed of Palestinian technocrats, tasked with taking over the administration of the Gaza Strip from Hamas – and of Nikolay Mladenov’s Office, the former Bulgarian diplomat appointed by Trump as his high-ranking representative for Gaza, according to officials.
“Cyprus is not a co-organizer of the event, and it does not take place at a political level. Cyprus was chosen by the executive committee,” explained one of the officials.
Trump has established the Council for Peace, led from Washington, to oversee the reconstruction and administration of the Gaza Strip. The group held its first meeting in February, but has made little progress due to funding issues, logistical obstacles, and questions regarding its international and legal legitimacy.
