Ukrainian troops on the front lines have begun using an artificial intelligence model developed by NATO that reportedly predicts Russian drone attacks. Known as “Initiative 13” or “Model 13,” the system “turns a wealth of disparate data into a visual map of anticipated activity,” allowing Ukrainian military commanders to plan operations for the following day, a representative of NATO’s Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) told Business Insider, as reported by The Moscow Times.

According to him, the system covers an area extending between 5 and 50 kilometres beyond the line of contact and divides it into geographic grid cells. “For each cell, the system determines the expected intensity of drone attacks and reconnaissance operations, the threat level, how it is evolving, and the range of possible values,” the JATEC representative explained.

The “Model 13” AI system is trained on battlefield data and takes into account past Russian drone activity, including drone types, deployment timing and methods, weather conditions, terrain, and distance from the front line. A next-day forecast identifying areas with a “high probability” of drone attacks helps commanders pinpoint at-risk locations and deploy troops and equipment more effectively.
