Russia is not prepared for negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine, nor for a de-escalation of military actions, stated the German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, after meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.
“To all those who continue to say that Germany must negotiate, that Germany must talk to Russia, I tell them now: we are doing this. And, unfortunately, Russia does not currently show a willingness to adopt a constructive negotiating position,” said Wadephul, according to Moscow Times.
According to him, the first meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Germany and Russia in January 2022 took place with the mediation of colleagues from other countries, who asserted that Moscow is “ready for dialogue”.
During the discussion, Wadephul addressed the issue of grain exports from Ukraine and Russia, as well as the incident with the drone found at Leipzig airport. He also reaffirmed Berlin’s “absolutely unwavering” support for Kiev.
Despite the “tense” discussion and Russia’s unwillingness to end the war, the German minister said it is “correct” to continue talking with Moscow and that this is currently the “mission of diplomacy”.
