The China that Donald Trump is visiting these days is not the same as it was nine years ago, when he last made a state visit to Beijing. The country led by Xi Jinping is more confident. Although the economy is struggling, nationalism is on the rise, and in the eyes of the ordinary Chinese, Donald Trump has lost some of his luster. Yaoji Chaogan, an unpretentious canteen located near the historic Drum and Bell Towers of Beijing, once proudly displayed photos of Joe Biden, who visited the restaurant in 2011, during his tenure as Vice President of the United States.
Biden’s visit went viral in China, and the press praised his so-called “noodle diplomacy” (one of the dishes ordered by Biden was zhajiang mian, a traditional type of Beijing noodles with bean paste).
But the evidence of Biden’s visit was removed when the restaurant was redecorated a few years ago. A visit from an American leader is no longer a cause for pride today.
“If American politicians were truly smart, they wouldn’t try to hold China back,” said Liu Cheng, 47, at a restaurant on Wednesday, for The Guardian.
Why do the Chinese believe that Donald Trump is a threat
Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday in a China that has become more confident in the nine years since his last state visit, in 2017. Although the economy is struggling, and wage growth has slowed, nationalism is on the rise.
This is fueled by state propaganda and the perception of decline and chaos in the USA, including the fact that the country ended up choosing such an unconventional and unpredictable leader as Trump.
