A serial killer, convicted for the murder of 11 women, wants to escape from prison by enlisting in the Russian army. Vitali Manișin, known as “The Fisherman from Altai”, has requested to be sent to the front in Ukraine, in the hope that he can avoid a 25-year prison sentence.

The former official from the Altai Krai region has submitted an official request to the administration of the Eniseisk prison, where he is serving his sentence. In the document, Manișin expressed his intention to sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense and to be sent to the war zone.

According to the publication nemoskva.net, his request has not yet received a response. The possible recruitment of a serial criminal convicted of multiple crimes, however, has sparked numerous reactions in Russia.

On social networks, many users criticized the idea that such a convict could end up on the front line and subsequently benefit from a possible sentence reduction or pardon.

“He will fight, he will receive a reward and he will be released. Who can say after this that there are no opportunities?”, commented a user, according to the Russian press.

The case of Vitali Manișin has become one of the most controversial serial crime files in Russia. The former head of the local administration in the Kalmanski district was suspected of committing several crimes in the ’90s, however, the investigation was blocked for many years.

Initially, investigators pursued another suspect, Aleksandr Anisimov, a shoe seller who allegedly confessed to the crimes. According to the official version, he supposedly committed suicide during a reenactment, throwing himself from the window of a building, and the case remained without a clear resolution for a long period.
