Internal military sources partially attribute the low efficiency of Ukrainian air defense to an insufficient period of training for new recruits, reports Euromaidan Press.

The Institute for Science and International Security indicates a decrease in the Ukrainian interception rate, from 96.58% in January 2025, to 82.7% in December, while Russian drone and missile attacks have doubled.

Among the factors contributing to this decline in anti-aircraft defense capability are the refinement of tactics and improvements made to drones by Russia while Ukraine faces a deficit of equipment and personnel. But a crucial aspect, often overlooked, is the insufficiency of training.

In an interview with the Ukrainian publication Militarnyi, Taras Chmut, Ukrainian veteran and head of the Come Back Alive fund, explained that the short period allocated for training affects the ability of mobilized personnel to master the use of air defense systems.

“If you don’t know how it works, you need to be properly trained. If the training requires 10 days and you have two, you will be trained so and so”, Chmut emphasized, adding that regardless of its theoretical performance, equipment loses its effectiveness if operators do not fully understand how it works under real conditions.

“In ideal conditions, the product rises to the level of its technical specifications. But you have to take into account reality – the people behind – and not make a product that is good only when it is in good hands”, Chmut continued.
