Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski stated that he is not sure if he will run again for the presidency, if the elections will be organized after the end of the war with Russia. The statement was made in an interview given to the Italian publication Corriere della Sera.

“The real question is when will we be able to organize elections? They will certainly take place after the end of the war, not during the temporary armistice”, Zelenski said, commenting on the American peace proposal which suggests organizing elections even without a complete peace agreement.

The President clarified that he has not yet decided if he will run. “I am not at all sure that I will run (for the presidency – ed.), I will see what the Ukrainians want”, he added, according to News.ro.

The Presidential Office explained to Ukrainska Pravda the context of the statement: when Zelenski was asked if he will run for elections, he answered:

“The real question is: when will we be able to organize elections? If they will take place after the end of the war, and not during the temporary ceasefire, I am not at all sure that I will run – I will see what the Ukrainians want.”

Preparations for elections and special conditions

In December 2025, Zelenski had stated that he is prepared to participate in elections, if international partners can ensure the security of the vote. He mentioned that legislative changes regarding elections during wartime are possible and he is waiting for proposals in this regard from the parliament.

In February 2026, the president stated that Ukraine can only organize elections under the conditions of a two-month armistice and proposed a similar armistice to Russia to hold elections on its territory.
