Volodymyr Zelensky says he is trying to do his job in such a way that, after the war and his presidential term end, he can stay in Ukraine and walk down the street without fearing that people hate him or want to harm him.

Asked in an interview given to the editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, Emma Tucker, how he copes with the stress accumulated after years of large-scale war, Zelensky admitted that he is not sure he manages to do this.

He said he is trying to do his job in such a way that, after the war ends, he can continue to live in his own country.

“It’s not about people respecting you. It’s about how you can carry on after the war and after the end of the presidential term, continue to live in your country, walk down the street and not have anyone wanting to kill you or hate you”, Zelenski said.

He explained that, during the war, mistakes are inevitable, especially under circumstances where he has to make numerous decisions daily and contribute to the negotiations for the conclusion of an agreement. He acknowledged that sometimes he has to do things he does not wish for, but which he believes are necessary to do.

“Yes, there are many things. And that’s why everything depends on your attitude towards the work you do, towards your country, and towards your people. At the end of the day, everything revolves around people. People give you the energy to live, but there are also people you hate and who consume all your energy,” added the Ukrainian leader.
