The ambition of Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski to obtain a clear commitment for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union by January 1, 2027, even with limited rights, raises serious reservations among several member states. European diplomats warn that such a move could “open Pandora’s box”, generating political and economic problems difficult to manage.

According to Reuters, Zelenski wants the prospect of Ukraine’s accession to the EU as early as next year to be included in the future peace agreement with Russia, and the United States supports this idea. For Kiev, such a political commitment would have major stakes.

“It is necessary for the peace process, for establishing a lasting and fair peace in Europe”, Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and chief negotiator with the EU, told the agency.

The Ukrainian official stated that his country could sign an accession agreement no later than 2027, even if ratification and subsequent stages would take longer. He promised that the Kiev authorities would take into account the concerns of member states and suggested the introduction of a monitoring system to verify compliance with democratic standards.

At the same time, Ukraine would accept a transition period before benefiting from European agricultural subsidies – a sensitive subject, given the size of the Ukrainian agricultural sector and the impact that accession would have on the redistribution of funds within the community block.
