The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, insisted on Tuesday that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is a key component of the country’s future security guarantees, after having discussions with European leaders about peace negotiations, reports Euronews.

Her statements come after serious accusations from Russia that Ukrainians attacked Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region with drones. Following a conversation with the leaders of Germany, France, and Poland, Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a post on X that Ukraine’s accession to the 27-member bloc represents a “key security guarantee” in itself.

“The prosperity of a free Ukrainian state lies in joining the EU,” she adds. According to the head of the EC, “accession (i.e. of a country to the EU) benefits not only the countries that join.” “As the successive waves of expansion show, Europe as a whole benefits from it,” she asserts.

Her comments come after a week of high-level meetings between American, Ukrainian, and European officials.
