The Lithuanian authorities, in their preparations for creating a line of defense in the Baltic region along the borders with Russia and Belarus, are installing on the border bridges “engineering structures for fixing explosives”. This was reported by LRT, referring to the Lithuanian army.
“Bridges and roads are chosen taking into account the location of natural obstacles and their strategic importance for Lithuania’s defense system,” explained the representative of the military authorities.
In the event of an armed conflict with Russia, the bridges near the border would be easier to destroy, which would help block the movement of enemy military forces, added the Lithuanian armed forces. The bridge mining works are carried out in accordance with the decisions taken in July last year regarding the strengthening of Lithuania’s borders.
The military notes that, at present, as part of the plan to create a line of fortifications near the border, several dozen points for storing anti-tank barriers and other barriers have been created, and tree planting works are being carried out to protect key roads and deepen irrigation channels, which will serve as additional trenches and anti-tank barriers.
