Russia intends to significantly expand the use of maritime drones, warns the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR). According to Ukrainian officials, Moscow is developing its own models, some inspired by technologies already used by Ukraine.

    Attacks on Ukrainian ports

In recent months, Russian forces have intensified strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure and on ships heading to these ports. Frequent targets have been facilities in Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Izmail.

Simultaneously, Russia is developing a new type of maritime drone, called “Skorlupa”, which could attack both ships and transport FPV type drones for strikes on coastal areas, including Odesa and Mykolaiv.

Ukrainian authorities say these developments require increased attention to protecting vital maritime corridors for exports.

A broader strategy in the Black Sea

Sources from political-military circles in Kiev argue that the development of drones is part of a broader strategy to consolidate control over the Black Sea. According to them, the Kremlin would aim to use naval pressure as an economic and political tool.

“For Moscow, controlling the Black Sea is not just about military presence. It means economy, logistics, exports, and psychological pressure on Ukraine’s international partners,” a source quoted by RBC-Ukraine publication stated.
