Russia conveyed on Thursday that it is not in a hurry to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, while American and Ukrainian officials met in Geneva to discuss efforts to stop the conflict.

Russia, which has been refusing for years to give up its claim to fully control the eastern region of Donetsk, stated on Thursday that it is too early to make estimates regarding when an agreement could be concluded.

“Have you heard any deadlines from us? We don’t have deadlines, we have goals. And we fulfill them”, said Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, quoted by CBS News.

And the Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, asserted that it is too early to make “forecasts” or to say at what stage the peace process is, specifying for the state press that “it would be a big mistake to try to define a certain stage or make forecasts now. I don’t want to make such mistakes”.

The statements come in the context where US President Trump is pushing for the end of the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II, but so far has not managed to mediate an agreement between Moscow and Kiev.

Previous rounds of negotiations, led by the United States, between Russian and Ukrainian officials, held in Geneva and Abu Dhabi, have not led to any compromise, the main obstacle being Moscow’s demand to formally take control over a vast part of Ukraine’s territory.
