The United States intends to significantly reduce its military contributions to the assistance of its European NATO allies in times of crisis, providing fewer fighter jets, military ships, and in-flight refueling aircraft, reports the German publication Spiegel on Tuesday, as relayed by Reuters and Agerpres.
Spiegel writes that the American Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, informed several high-ranking officials from NATO member states about these plans, towards the end of last week, at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.
Informed sources on the issue have stated that the US government intended to announce to its allies last week that it will reduce the American capabilities available for NATO; for example, the number of strategic bombers is expected to be cut in half.
Spiegel quotes the American envoy Alexander Velez-Green, who allegedly stated at the closed-door meeting in Brussels that the number of American fighter jets made available to the alliance will be reduced by a third.
The navy will have fewer destroyers available for NATO. American submarines will no longer be involved at all.
Europe will need to secure its own reconnaissance drones, while the United States will significantly reduce the supply of armed models.
