On Sunday, a Russian drone severely damaged a building used for storing spent nuclear fuel, located near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Vladimir Zelensky called the attack deliberate and despicable.
There were no containers with hazardous substances in the building at the time of the explosion, reports news.ro. The radiation level in the area is within normal limits, the Ukrainian authorities announced.
A fire broke out as a result of the attack, and the flames engulfed approximately 40 square meters and were quickly extinguished. The staff did not suffer any harm.
“At this moment, the radiological safety limits have not been tightened. But it is obvious that Russia’s arrogance, which was already at its peak, has increased even more. It was a critical infrastructure facility. And a very despicable Russian attack,” said Vladimir Zelenski.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has stated that the organization’s experts are preparing to visit the area.
