The Russian authorities are preparing to introduce a tax for the screening of foreign films in cinemas, the money to be used to support domestic productions.

The announcement was made by the director and propagandist Nikita Mihalkov, who specified that the level of the tax will be determined by economy experts. Moreover, distributors will have to pay an access fee for each foreign film to be analyzed before receiving permission to enter the cinemas in Russia.

Previously, Mihalkov proposed the introduction of a fixed tax of 5 million rubles for each foreign film that reaches the Russian market, as well as directing 10% of their revenues towards the financing of Russian cinema.

He suggested that the management of the new system be entrusted to the media holdings Gazprom-Media or National Media Group, whose board of directors is led by Alina Kabaeva.
