Mircea Geoană explains the enormous stakes of the NATO Summit in Ankara: “The Alliance is being repositioned. It’s not a process that will be easy”

The former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană, stated on Monday, in an interview for Antena 3 CNN, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, that in this complex moment for the Alliance, “the nature of war and the definition of peace are changing,” and this summit “is part of a process that will not be easy, of repositioning the alliance between the US and Europe.” In addition, regarding the newly announced NATO bank, Geoană emphasized that “companies in Romania will be able to borrow as cheaply as a company in Germany”.

“Like in an old and long marriage, we are in this alliance. As always in the life of the planet, in the life of people, there comes a time when things can no longer continue peacefully. This summit is part of a process that will not be easy, of rearranging the alliance between the USA and Europe. It is a renegotiation. The alliance needs to rebalance. We sometimes see controversial statements, but, fundamentally, this is my message. And here, in Ankara, perhaps even the future American president, we will continue to balance this alliance. You cannot endlessly ask everything of America. The Ankara summit will be the summit where our geography, the Black Sea, the eastern flank, will be put back at the center of the discussions and I believe that the president and the Romanian delegation will get the most out of this summit”, said Mircea Geoană.

The former deputy secretary-general emphasized that, currently, “the nature of war and the definition of peace are changing”.

“The nature of war is changing, as is the definition of peace. What we believed until now, that the Patriot systems solve our problem, we now see new technologies, tested by both Russia and Ukraine, showing us that the issue of NATO defense is becoming more complicated. We must be realistic that the spectrum of threats from Russia is extremely broad, from drones to missile systems and attacks on critical infrastructures. We have in the Black Sea and in Dobrogea the highest concentration of strategic assets: Neptun Deep, the Cernavodă power plant, the data giga factory. The lessons learned from the war in Ukraine and from Iran have not yet reached the decision-makers, and the sooner we learn, the better. This rethinking of plans must respond to these realities. The answer for us is that we need to take measures much faster. If we now exclusively develop anti-drone systems, we risk that next time Russia will know and come on another component,” he emphasized.
