The most prominent Democrat on the House Oversight Committee is investigating information that a Russian oligarch may have financed an event related to Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding with hundreds of thousands of dollars, reports Axios.
The process is led by Democrat Robert Garcia, a high-ranking member of the Oversight Committee. Garcia could become the main investigator of the Congress in case the Democrats regain control over the House of Representatives.
The investigation also provides clues about the direction Garcia might take should the Democrats take over the committee’s leadership.
“Democrats from the Oversight Committee are investigating the numerous ways in which the Trump family has tried to enrich themselves due to their proximity to President Donald Trump”, Garcia wrote in a letter addressed to the White House Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles.
In a separate letter addressed to Donald Trump Jr., Garcia stated that the information published by ProPublica about the role of Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev in financing the event “could be the most serious accusation” made so far against the president’s son.
