Polish police, border guards and armed forces have launched a major operation along the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave. The operation follows intelligence suggesting that acts of sabotage could take place along the border in the coming days.
Police forces in the border region have been reinforced with officers from other parts of the country, Agerpres reports. The authorities have also deployed elite army units to the area.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that Poland had thwarted a possible provocation overnight at its border with Kaliningrad. He said Polish and allied intelligence services had been warning for several weeks that “acts of sabotage or more serious provocations” could take place along the border with the Russian Federation, including “incursions by armed individuals into Polish territory.”
Tusk said he was informed at midnight of suspicious activity along the border in the north of the country and decided to deploy forces to the area, thwarting the attempts.
Assessing that the threats could persist, Tusk called on the security forces to remain vigilant.
