Ukrainian anti-corruption investigators on Wednesday accused senior security officials of shielding an illicit business network involved in crimes including fraud and drug trafficking, according to Reuters.
Senior officials from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), National Police and Prosecutor General’s Office took bribes to shield a criminal network and even helped plan attacks and kidnappings, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) said.
Oleksandr Poklad, the acting head of the SBU, announced that the agency had dismissed two senior officers under investigation and was “fully cooperating” with the inquiry.
“The Security Service expects a transparent, objective and impartial investigation,” Poklad said in a statement. “The SBU works solely for Ukraine and will continue to do so,” the official added.
Police announced that they had suspended the officers under investigation, while warning against “premature conclusions.”
The Prosecutor General’s Office said it was ready to cooperate but had been unaware of the illegal activities reported by NABU.
