Ukraine’s New Donbas. How Transcarpathia, the region bordering Romania where many ethnic Romanians live, is transforming into an industrial center

About 300 enterprises have been relocated to the Transcarpathia region. How has this changed the economic structure of the area?

The Transcarpathia region includes the Maramureș area to the right of the Tisza River. According to the 2001 Ukrainian population census, over 32,000 Romanians (2.6%) from the region’s population lived in Transcarpathia. The Romanians in Transcarpathia reside in the former Teacev (Teceu) and Rahiv (Rahău) districts.

Most of the localities with a Romanian population have been included in the Slatina commune. The Romanian community in Transcarpathia is predominantly rural, and the number of villagers has increased since the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence.

Historically, Transcarpathia has not been an industrial center. After gaining independence, the locals’ prosperity was based on “smuggling”, seasonal work abroad, and tourism.

However, Russia’s large-scale invasion, which began in February 2022, has opened a new chapter in the region’s life. In Transcarpathia, 330 enterprises from the eastern and southern regions of the country have relocated – including metallurgical and mechanical engineering factories. Along with these businesses, tens of thousands of Ukrainians have also settled in the area.
