Montenegro took a step closer to EU membership on Wednesday, after the bloc’s countries agreed to start work on an accession treaty for the small Balkan nation, European officials said, according to Euractiv.
The ambassadors of the current 27 EU member states have decided to establish an “ad-hoc working group” for the preparation of an accession pact, a technical but essential step on the path to accession, an official said.
“We are confident that this will send a strong signal that accession is within reach of expansion partners,” said a spokesperson for Cyprus, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU, about the decision taken during a meeting in Brussels.
Montenegro, along with Albania, is favored to become the first country to join the European Union since Croatia was admitted to the club in 2013.
