Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has asked the Health Minister, Mikhail Murashko, to expand the “reproductive screening” program for the population, in an attempt to increase the declining birth rate.
“In order for the number of parents to increase, of course, the participation of citizens in medical checks from the perspective of assessing reproductive health must be expanded,” Putin said during a meeting at the Federal Center for Disaster Medicine. He emphasized that such checks should be extended for both men and women. In turn, Murashko stated that the program enjoys high popularity, according to TASS.
Putin had requested as early as 2018, along with the launch of national programs from his fourth term, to halt the natural decline of the population, which began shortly after the annexation of Crimea. However, despite the “Demography” program, valued at 4 trillion rubles (approximately 41 billion euros), Russia lost about 4 million inhabitants between 2018–2024, due to the fact that the number of deaths exceeded the number of births.
