The Kremlin maintains that nuclear weapons remain the “only guarantee” against a world war. Dmitri Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson, stated on Wednesday that the international security system is “degrading,” reports Kyiv Post. His statements came after the expiration of the New START treaty between Russia and the United States, which ended the last remaining restrictions on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals. The last nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the United States, New START, expired in February, removing restrictions on the world’s two largest nuclear powers.
So far, there are no signs that either party intends to extend or replace the agreement, although both have agreed to resume high-level military dialogue. At a foreign policy forum in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the global security system is “degrading”.
“In fact, nothing remains in this world except for nuclear deterrence. It is the only thing that protects the world from a global war”, he said. “As technology evolves, it is already clear that new types of non-nuclear weapons will emerge, but these could ultimately match nuclear weapons in destructive power”, added Peskov.
The Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, has repeatedly resorted to nuclear threats in the four years of war against Ukraine, drawing accusations from Europe and the United States that he is irresponsibly resorting to nuclear threats.
