The EU Ambassador to Chișinău, Iwona Piorka, presented Vasile Tofan with the enlargement report on the Republic of Moldova. The assessment ranks Moldova among the four countries furthest along in the EU accession process.

The Republic of Moldova’s accession negotiations with the European Union could be concluded by 2028 if the authorities maintain the pace of reforms. Maia Sandu delivered this message following the publication of the European Commission’s annual enlargement report, which notes progress across all 33 negotiating chapters.

The head of state said the Commission’s assessment reflects the work done over the past year to bring the Republic of Moldova into line with European standards, jurnal.md. reports. According to the president, the EU’s positive assessment and the prospect of concluding negotiations by 2028 should give both the authorities and society confidence that this goal is achievable, provided reforms continue.

“The European Commission considers this goal ambitious but achievable, provided we maintain the pace of reforms,” Maia Sandu said.

The President also drew attention to the outstanding issues identified in the report. Priorities that must remain on the authorities’ agenda include effectively implementing the laws that have been passed and achieving tangible results in corruption cases.

Igor Grosu said the authorities aim to maintain the current pace of reforms and conclude accession negotiations in early 2028.

The Enlargement Report on the Republic of Moldova assesses the progress made between 1 September 2025 and 1 September 2026.

The document outlines developments in the justice system, efforts to combat corruption, and the functioning of institutions, as well as the country’s level of alignment with EU legislation and standards. It also highlights areas of concern.
