A 49-year-old man, originally from Azerbaijan, suspected of unauthorized collection of information in the interest of representatives of the special services of the Russian Federation, was detained by authorities in Chisinau.

According to the National Police, the detention took place within the framework of a criminal case, after, in August 2026, INI officers came into possession of information regarding his recruitment by representatives of the special services of the Russian Federation, writes realitatea.md. The foreigner would have been trained to carry out subversive activities on the territory of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

“The focus would have been on military objectives within the country, as well as those of the USA in the Republic of Moldova. The collected information was to be transmitted to a person who would have acted as a curator and about whom there is data suggesting they are a representative of the special services of the Russian Federation. Following the search, law enforcement officers seized a phone. The examination of the device revealed data indicating contacts with an individual who allegedly presented themselves as an employee of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation”, the institution reports.

The individual was subsequently placed in preventive detention for 30 days and is under investigation for unauthorized information gathering, an offense punishable by imprisonment from 2 to 5 years.
