Russia has lost approximately 1.4 million military personnel – dead, severely wounded, or missing – from the beginning of the large-scale invasion in Ukraine, in February 2022, until June 2026, according to a new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Among these, at least 450,000 were killed, estimate the authors of the study.
The analysis shows that, in the first half of the year 2026, the Russian army lost between 30,000 and 34,000 soldiers monthly, exceeding the recruitment rate of new contract-based soldiers, estimated at approximately 27,000 people per month.
According to CSIS, the loss ratio between Russia and Ukraine has reached 8 to 1 in favor of Ukraine in the first half of 2026, compared to a ratio of 2-3 to 1 for most of the war. Researchers explain this change by Ukraine’s widespread use of drones, including systems equipped with elements of artificial intelligence.
